Introduction to Whitewater Paddling
Introduces foundational skills in whitewater canoeing and rafting. Topics cover beginner and intermediate whitewater paddling skills on swift currents in a forested river setting. Students scout and run Class I and II rapids in tandem and solo canoes. Skills include reading whitewater rapids, understanding river hydrology, recognizing and avoiding river hazards, and using paddling strokes to maneuver canoes or rafts through rapids. The course also focuses on rescuing paddlers after canoe capsizes, the basics of swift-water rescue, and proper use of whitewater equipment such as paddles, helmets, throw ropes, floatation bags, dry bags, wetsuits, and other gear.
Special Requirements: This course involves moderate to high physical activity and the ability to be active and in the outdoors for a full day in a remote, forested swift-water river environment in potentially low temperatures and wet weather with late autumn conditions including the ability to swim in a river current in cold water. All students must submit the OLP Health History and Physical Examination Attestation Form, completed and signed by a physician, verifying medical clearance for full participation.
Students participate in off-campus field trips. Students assume any travel, permit/pass, rental, and guide costs associated with field trips.
Schedule: Tuesdays & Wednesdays from 9 am to 4 pm (4 class sessions)
A student who successfully completes this course will be able to:
- Plan, conduct, evaluate, and participate in river paddling trips in technically rated whitewater rapids and currents.
- Describe, apply, and demonstrate paddling strokes and techniques for maneuvering and controlling a canoe and/or raft in technical whitewater conditions.
