Central Sterile Processing
In this intensive, hands-on 14-week training program, students will learn to clean, sterilize, and set up surgical instruments and medical equipment. Through a combination of classroom instruction and a required clinical experience in a hospital setting, students will assemble, adjust and check non-sterile equipment; develop an understanding of microbes and germs and how they cause infections; and develop skills in managing inventory, ordering supplies, inspecting, maintaining, delivering and retrieving equipment and instruments for surgery, emergency room and other patient care units.
After completing this training program, all students are required to sit for the certification exam to obtain provisional certification from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA).
Participation in this program is dependent on the results of a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check. For more information regarding CORI checks for Workforce Development programs, visit this page.
This program will run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 pm to 9 pm. Course sessions will be held remotely, at GCC, and at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.
After completing this program, students will test for the certifying exam given at a local Prometric Testing Center to obtain provisional certification from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA).
